As I sit with my son, watching the Academy Awards, I am reminded of how much talent there is, here, in Nyack
, and the rest of the surrounding River Villages and neighborhood communities in the lower Hudson Valley of Rockland County. Nyack
was home to one of the most prolific screenwriter of Hollywood's golden age, Ben Hecht. He was even referred to as "The Shakespeare of Hollywood"...such notable films as MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, THE FRONT PAGE, GUNGA DIN, and WUTHERING HEIGHTS...and these are just a few! Of course famous thespians from Nyack
and the surrounding areas included or include today, Miss Helen Hayes, Al Pacino, Beverly D'Angelo, Bill Murray, Burgess Meredith, Paulette Goddard, Ethan Hawke, William Hurt, John Francis Daley, Rosie O'Donnell, Jon Voigt, and the list goes on.
Certainly, no Nyack
blog inspired by tonight's Oscars, and referring to Hollywood would not be complete without mentioning the wonderfully talented, Academy Award winning director and humanitarian, Upper Nyack
's own Jonathan Demme. Clearly the river villages foster and welcome unprecedented talent...
