Autumn Is A Favorite Season In Nyack
Autumn is a glorious time of year I look forward to more than any other seasonal change. Crisp days and cool nights make for great outdoor fun and sleeping. Fall started following the autumnal equinox, 9/23/2019, when daylight and night time are equal. The word equinox comes from Latin meaning “equal night”. The seasons are due to the Earth’s axis shifting during its 365 day trip around the sun. It will continue its shift to the furthest point in December called the winter solstice. Long shadows, short days, and cold weather mark this time when the northern hemisphere is furthest from the sun. The ancient Mayan pyramid in Chichen Itza, Mexico has steps that appear to slither like a snake exactly at sunset on the spring and autumn equinox. WOW!!
A few terms we associate with this time of year are often misused. Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the equinox, this occurred September 14th. The Hunter’s moon will occur October 13th. Indian Summer is another term often used to denote any Fall warm spell. It really requires a hard frost before the warm spell. The Farmer’s Almanac goes on to also state that it must occur between November 11th-20th. Who Knew?
Whatever your love, it is a magical season of magnificent leaf colors, Jack-o-lanterns, hot cocoa, and Thanksgiving. I hope everybody enjoys this gift from nature. I know we always do!
