What Nyack Really Means

So a lot of people are familiar with Nyack but I'm sure not many of you know that the word Nyack comes from the Nyack Indians language of Renneiu meaning "point of land".

You may be wondering "Why would Nyack (a river town) be called 'point of land'?"

This translation is much different than "fishing village" which is what many people have said.  Nyack was named this after the Nyack Indians, but to understand why our town of Nyack is named after them, you have to go back to when the European settlers first made contact with the Nyack Indians.  They made contact with the Nyack Indians on Coney Island which was a peninsula at low tide.  This was appropriate for the natives who were living there at the time.  Coney Island=Point of land.

The more you know!
