Rowing on the Tappan Zee

For about ten years now, people have been seeing (and sometimes hearing) members of the Piermont Rowing Club as they row their shells on the Tappan Zee. I'm looking forward to the new season, which will begin in a few weeks. The club has the "rule of 100", which means that the air and water temperatures must add up to 100 before a shell can go in the water. Since the water temperature in April is a little below 50 degrees, and since we have to launch our shells by walking into the water, the launches in the early season can be a little interesting. The good news is that we quickly warm up after a few minutes of rowing. Our usual route goes from Piermont to the Tappan Zee Bridge and back, about two miles. If were feeling ambitious, we'll row from the bridge to the end of the Piermont pier and then home, making a triangle of it, and a five mile row. Afterwards, we sometimes walk to Bunbury's, the club's unofficial headquarters, for coffee and pastry. It's not a bad way to start a day.
